The zone as a clear pathway to happiness
When was the last time you were in the zone? When self-awareness and worry dissipated, leaving you with a strong sense of control and enjoyment?
The zone, or “flow” is an estate of optimal experience, commonly noticed by people from Aristotle to little kids who can see how time flies when they’re having fun (and how it drags when they’re not)?
Flow is not to be taken casually. Mihaly Csikszentimihalyi, the author who brought Flow to our awareness almost 25 years ago, as a psychological concept, marries Flow and optimal experience with happiness.
Much is written and spoken on happiness these days, as we realise that, for all wonders of technology and scientific progress, we have done very little in systematically improve happiness in our societies. All the literature in happiness can do a great deal in making you a happier person, irrespective of what is going on in your life. And that is more than a good reason to buy yourself a few books.
But if you really want to understand enjoyment in an abstract sense, how optimal experiences can be achieved irrespective of age, class or nationality, and to be and make others happy, check Mihaly’s book.
